The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission announced on September 14 that Chairman Choi Wonho will attend the 69th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria, from September 15 to 19, to discuss regulatory issues and matters of international concern.
Chairman Choi will also participate in the 56th International Nuclear Regulators Association (INRA) meeting, where he will share regulatory experiences and discuss ways to enhance regulatory efficiency with the heads of nuclear regulatory agencies from nine countries, including the United States and Japan.
He will discuss nuclear safety issues with France, which operates the world's second-largest nuclear fleet, and exchange experiences regarding the regulation of spent nuclear fuel disposal facilities with Sweden, which operates a high-level radioactive waste repository, as well as explore avenues for cooperation.
Choi will also meet with the Czech Republic, which has signed a contract to introduce Korean nuclear power plants, to share updates on the standard design approval review for the APR1000 reactor type and discuss regulatory experiences related to the introduction of new nuclear power plants.
He will hold discussions with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which is operating four Korean-designed APR1400 reactors commercially, to share regulatory experiences with the same reactor type and discuss the current status of nuclear fuel regulation.
Choi also plans to meet with Vietnam, which is pursuing new nuclear power plant construction, to introduce Korea’s nuclear safety regulatory framework and share examples of regulatory cooperation with the UAE, thereby establishing a partnership. Chairman Choi stated, "International cooperation is essential for the use of nuclear energy, where safety must be the top priority," adding, "Through bilateral and multilateral cooperation, we will not only promote our regulatory experience and expertise but also create opportunities to share insight on addressing safety regulatory issues wisely."
