"OpenAI Plans to Cut Microsoft Revenue Share from 20% to 8%"

OpenAI, the developer behind ChatGPT, is reportedly planning to reduce its future revenue-sharing ratio with Microsoft (MS) to less than half of the current level.

"OpenAI Plans to Cut Microsoft Revenue Share from 20% to 8%"

According to IT media outlet The Information on September 13 (local time), OpenAI is planning to lower the revenue-sharing ratio for Microsoft from the current 20% to approximately 8% by 2030. This is the first time that a specific figure has been disclosed. However, it has not been confirmed whether Microsoft has ultimately agreed to this figure.

Microsoft has been OpenAI's largest investor, having invested over $13 billion since 2019. Since last year, the two companies have been building a new partnership in line with OpenAI's corporate restructuring. Currently, OpenAI relies entirely on Microsoft's computing infrastructure for both artificial intelligence (AI) model development and services, and has been sharing a portion of its revenue as a result.

However, OpenAI is reportedly seeking to reduce its dependence on Microsoft by building its own large-scale data centers through the "Stargate" project and by utilizing infrastructure from other cloud providers such as Google and CoreWeave. Consequently, the company believes it should also reduce the amount of revenue it shares with Microsoft.

The Information estimated that if the 8% ratio is agreed upon, OpenAI could secure approximately $50 billion (about 70 trillion won) in additional revenue by 2030.
