Samsung Display Invites Innovative Technology Proposals... Up to 800 Million Won in Research Funding Over 3 Years

Seven Areas Including Micro and Nano LED
Professors and Research Teams from Domestic Universities Eligible
First Public Contest for Industry-Academia Research Projects

Samsung Display is taking steps to secure innovative technologies in order to strengthen its future competitiveness.

On September 14, Samsung Display announced that it has been publicly soliciting innovative technology ideas from domestic universities since September 12, with the application period open until October 17.

The areas of recruitment include next-generation display technology and OLED (organic light-emitting diode) innovation technology. Submissions are divided into designated topics and open topics. The designated topics cover seven areas, such as the development of high-speed micro and nano LED (light-emitting diode) transfer technology and the development of robust anti-reflection film for foldable displays. For open topics, researchers are free to propose research projects on next-generation technologies, including foldable, stretchable, and micro displays.

Samsung Display plans to select up to 10 projects through this contest, providing annual research funding of 100 million to 200 million won per project. Among these, 2 to 3 projects that receive outstanding evaluations will receive additional funding of up to 600 million won over two years. In total, up to 800 million won can be provided per project over a maximum of three years.

Research teams may freely propose the research period and budget, and any professor affiliated with a domestic university may apply. Multiple research teams may also collaborate and apply in the form of a consortium.

This is the first time Samsung Display is selecting industry-academia research projects through a public contest. The company explained that, as the display industry undergoes a period of transition due to market diversification and intensified competition, it has prepared this contest to discover creative convergence technology ideas necessary for future technological competitiveness and to actively utilize not only internal but also external research infrastructure in order to overcome technological limitations.

Lee Changhee, Head of Display Research Center (Executive Vice President), stated, "As the concept and role of displays are rapidly expanding through convergence with different industries such as AI (artificial intelligence), electric vehicles, and robotics, 'open innovation'-finding technological solutions through external collaboration-is more important than ever. We hope that this contest will serve as an opportunity for various innovative technologies to move beyond ideas to commercialization, ultimately transforming the industry's paradigm."

Since 2014, Samsung Display has established display research centers at major domestic universities and has been conducting joint research with university researchers for over a decade.
