"Just Asked About Buying the Stockings"
Chinese Tourist Urgently Arrested... Denies Charges
A Chinese tourist in Jeju was apprehended by police after following a woman and demanding the stockings she was wearing.
The Jeju Western Police Station announced on the 12th that they had urgently arrested and are investigating a Chinese man in his 20s, identified as A, on suspicion of violating the Act on Punishment of Stalking Crimes, after he followed a woman and demanded, "Sell me the stockings you are wearing."
According to the police, A is accused of demanding that a Korean woman in her 20s sell him the stockings she was wearing for 1 million won. When she refused, he allegedly stalked her for about 150 meters. It is reported that A came to Jeju for tourism under a visa waiver program. He reportedly used a translation application on his mobile phone to communicate with the victim.
The victim, noticing that A was following her, entered a nearby convenience store instead of going home and called 112 to report the incident.
During the police investigation, A claimed, "I did not ask for the stockings she was wearing, but wanted to know where I could buy the same stockings," denying the allegations. Police have placed an exit ban on A and are investigating the details of the case.
Recently, crimes committed by Chinese tourists have become a growing issue in Jeju. According to the Jeju police, during a 100-day "Special Security Measures for Responding to Foreign Crime" campaign conducted from March 23 to June 30, there were 4,806 cases of basic order violations such as jaywalking, illegal dumping, and public urination.
There have also been mass apprehensions of Chinese nationals who illegally entered the country via Jeju. The Jeju Regional Coast Guard arrested six Chinese individuals on charges of illegally entering Jeju by rubber boat from Jiangsu Province, China.
