On September 12, Suncheon City in South Jeolla Province announced that it will hold a special cultural festival, "Urban Liberation Road, Weekend Plaza (A Sanctuary for the Youth)," linked to "Youth Day," for two days from the 19th to the 20th in the Fashion Street area of Yeonhyang-dong.
This event aims to provide the younger generation with a unique experience where they can take center stage, communicate, and unleash their energy, and is expected to inject new vitality into the local commercial district.
The festival's programs have been upgraded under the theme of "youth," building on the enthusiastic response from citizens to previous events held on Citizen Road in June and Culture Street in August. It is anticipated to become a new model for urban cultural festivals, revitalizing the stagnant downtown commercial area and transforming the Yeonhyang-dong area into a unique cultural branding space for Suncheon.
The trademark of "Weekend Plaza" is the "Grass Road," which will transform the gray asphalt into a green grass carpet. This vibrant green space in the heart of the city will offer citizens an oasis-like, unique place to relax. In particular, a photo zone featuring a 10-meter-tall sculpture of Rumi, the city's mascot, is expected to attract visitors and quickly become a new hotspot on social media.
In addition, a variety of interactive programs will satisfy visitors' senses, including the Ending Road Show, character pop-ups and exhibitions tailored to the tastes of Millennials & Gen Z, and participatory creator shows. Especially in the Creator Zone, visitors can look forward to a random dance party by "Dancing Bear," a dance creator with millions of subscribers, and an arm-wrestling match with Hong Jiseung, a national arm-wrestling champion. These activities will go beyond simple spectating, offering citizens the opportunity to participate directly and express their energy.
A city official stated, "In celebration of Youth Day, we have created a stage in the heart of the city where young people can fully enjoy their youth in a variety of ways," adding, "Suncheon City will continue to prepare various initiatives so that it can be branded as a 'liberation city' where young people can freely imagine, challenge themselves, and grow together with the city."
