Taebaek City has continued to hold this annual memorial service to honor the spirits of industrial workers who lost their lives to pneumoconiosis while working in the coal industry, which was once a national energy source. The event is also intended to comfort the bereaved families of the deceased and to foster a culture of social respect.
The memorial service is conducted in the following order: the national ceremony, incense offering and floral tribute, memorial address, recitation of a memorial poem, and a free incense offering.

Mayor Sangho Lee stated, "I pay tribute to the souls of the 11,370 individuals who dedicated their lives to the coal industry and lost their lives to pneumoconiosis. I extend my deepest condolences to those currently battling illness and to the bereaved families. Based on the sacrifices and dedication of the past, I will do my utmost to lead the region toward development and a brighter future."
