Amazon Joins the Robotaxi Race
Intensifying Competition Expected in the Market
Zoox, Amazon's autonomous driving subsidiary, launched its robotaxi service in Las Vegas, United States, on September 10 (local time). With Amazon joining Waymo and Tesla in operating robotaxis, competition in the sector is expected to intensify.
Zoox announced, "Starting September 10, we are officially launching Zoox service on the Las Vegas Strip and surrounding areas," adding, "Vehicles can be summoned for free through the app." The company plans to operate the service free of charge initially, then switch to a paid model after receiving approval from regulatory authorities. At first, the service will focus on various resorts, hotels, and performance venues within Las Vegas, with plans to gradually expand the service area.
This marks the first time in the United States that a dedicated robotaxi with no driving controls whatsoever has been made available to the general public. Unlike most robotaxis, which are retrofitted from existing vehicles and still include auxiliary steering wheels and pedals, Zoox vehicles have no driving controls at all. The interior features four seats facing each other, and the vehicle can travel in both directions without a designated front or rear.
Zoox is also preparing free test rides in San Francisco. However, the company has not yet disclosed when it will begin paid operations there.
Waymo, Google's autonomous driving subsidiary, is already operating paid services in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. In Austin and Atlanta, it is providing joint services in partnership with Uber.
