Naju City in South Jeolla Province is working to build consensus and engage in communication with citizens to ensure the successful creation of the Yeongsan River Garden and the upcoming "2025 Naju Yeongsan River Festival" scheduled for October.
On September 9, Naju City held the "Yeongsan River Garden Creation and Yeongsan River Festival Citizen Briefing" at the city hall's main conference room.
The event was organized to provide citizens with accurate information about the creation of the Naju Yeongsan River Garden and the functions and roles of the retention basin through open communication, while also promoting the "2025 Naju Yeongsan River Festival" to be held from October 8, thereby fostering an atmosphere of participation in the festival.
Approximately 300 citizens attended the event, demonstrating strong interest.
The briefing session included an introduction to the 2025 Naju Yeongsan River Festival, a presentation on the functions and roles of the Yeongsan River Retention Ecological Wetland by Professor Joo Jin-gul of Dongshin University, an explanation of the Yeongsan River Garden creation project, and a Q&A session with citizens.
This year's festival will open with the original musical "Queen Janghwa," a modern reinterpretation of the epic of King Taejo Wang Geon of Goryeo. In addition, a "Yeongsan River Themed Pavilion" will be set up, offering a comprehensive view of the river's ecology, history, and culture.
Moreover, 10 million cosmos flowers will be in full bloom across a 230,000-square-meter area, providing a visual feast for visitors.
In particular, a variety of experiential programs will be available for families, including the children's job experience zone "Kidzania," a sing-along show, a magic show, and board games.
During the Q&A session, citizens raised questions related to the garden project, such as requests for expanding pedestrian access to the festival site, restoration plans after water retention, and the creation of year-round recreational facilities. Experts and officials provided detailed answers to help citizens better understand the project.
Participants expressed high expectations, saying, "Once the Yeongsan River Garden is established, it will become a new landmark for Naju in harmony with the festival."
Mayor Yoon Byung-tae stated, "Through this briefing, we were able to confirm the high level of interest and anticipation among citizens," and added, "We will develop the garden as a representative space that preserves the original functions of the retention wetland while encompassing ecology, culture, leisure, and tourism."
He further emphasized, "The '2025 Naju Yeongsan River Festival,' to be held from October 8 to 12, will become Naju's signature festival where citizens and tourists can come together," and encouraged active participation.
Going forward, Naju City plans to develop the Yeongsan River Garden as a citizen-friendly space where flowers bloom throughout the year and to lay the foundation for the "Era of 5 Million Naju Tourists" in connection with the Yeongsan River Festival.
