Fifteen Local Leaders Join as Founding Members
Organizing Committee Launch Process Officially Begins
On September 10 at 3:00 p.m., Ulsan City will hold the '2028 Ulsan International Garden Expo Organizing Committee Founders' Meeting' in the main conference room on the second floor of Ulsan City Hall, pledging to ensure the successful hosting of the expo.
This founders' meeting has been organized so that the founding members, representing key local figures, can formalize the establishment of the organizing committee and confirm the purpose and direction of its operations.
Fifteen founding members will participate in the event, including Kim Doo-gyeom, Mayor of Ulsan and representative of the founders; Lee Seong-ryong, Chairman of the Ulsan Metropolitan Council; Cheon Chang-su, Superintendent of Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education; Lee Yoon-chul, Chairman of the Ulsan Chamber of Commerce and Industry; university presidents from the region; and representatives from the four major industries-Hyundai Motor Company, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, SK Energy, S-Oil, and Korea Zinc.
Before the main event, the participants will share the vision and goals of the expo and reaffirm their commitment to its success through a flower pot performance.
They will then discuss and adopt the statement of purpose, articles of association, regulations, and the composition plan for the organizing committee members.
The adopted items will be finalized at the inaugural general meeting scheduled for November.
Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom stated, "Ulsan is evolving beyond being an industrial capital to become a capital of artificial intelligence (AI) and gardens. We will make every effort to prepare for the international garden expo so that Ulsan, reborn as a garden city where nature and industry coexist by transforming a landfill into a garden, can be introduced to the world."
He added, "By gathering the wisdom and passion of the founders and citizens, we will shape the next 100 years of Ulsan's future."
The organizing committee plans to complete all legal procedures after a review by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety regarding local public institutions in October, and officially launch in January next year.
The committee aims to complete preparations for the expo venue by October 2027 and will begin full-scale activities to ensure the success of the expo, which will be held for six months from April 22 to October 22, 2028, at Taehwagang National Garden, Samsan-Yeocheon Landfill, and the Namsan-ro area, with a goal of attracting 13 million visitors.
In particular, by transforming the Samsan-Yeocheon Landfill into a garden, the committee plans to present a new model of urban ecological restoration to the world, reflecting the spirit of the times and achieving carbon neutrality in the era of climate crisis.
