Fencing athletes from Jeollanam-do achieved remarkable success at a national competition, winning gold, silver, and bronze medals, as well as earning spots on the national team.
According to the Jeollanam-do Sports Council and the Jeollanam-do Fencing Association on September 9, the Jeonnam fencing team secured medals in both individual and team events at the "30th Kim Changhwan National Men's and Women's Fencing Championships and National Team Selection Tournament," which concluded on September 5 in Yanggu, Gyeonggi Province. Kwon Omin from Haenam County Office and Park Sohyeong from Jeonnam Provincial Government were selected for the national team.
With these achievements, Jeonnam fencing has sent a strong signal of its potential for outstanding results at the upcoming 106th National Sports Festival.
First, Kwon Omin from Haenam County Office claimed the gold medal in the men's ?p?e individual event.
Kwon Omin defeated Ye Donggeun (Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Fencing Association) in the round of 16, Kim Dowan (Korea National Sport University) in the quarterfinals, and Jang Hyomin (Ulsan Metropolitan City Hall) in the semifinals with a score of 15-10, advancing to the finals.
In the final match against Hwang Hyunil (Ulsan City Hall), he secured a dramatic victory with a score of 15-13, reaching the top in the men's ?p?e category.
Park Sohyeong from Jeonnam Provincial Government also advanced to the finals in the women's ?p?e individual event by defeating Lee Sinhui (Gangwon Provincial Government) 15-7 in the semifinals. However, she narrowly missed out on gold, losing to Min Jiweon (Gyeonggi Provincial Government) 11-15 in the final, and had to settle for the silver medal.
As a result, Kwon Omin from Haenam County Office and Park Sohyeong from Jeonnam Provincial Government earned selection points and officially joined the national team for the 2025-2026 season, where they will compete on the international stage.
The team also achieved excellent results in the team events.
The Jeonnam Provincial Government fencing team, consisting of Park Sohyeong, Kim Hyangeun, Kim Taehui, and Seon Jaehui, finished as runners-up in the women's ?p?e team event.
Jeonnam Provincial Government defeated Korea National Sport University (45-37) and Chungbuk Provincial Government (45-31) in succession to reach the finals, but after a close match against Gyeryong City Hall, they narrowly lost 42-45 and finished in second place.
In the women's sabre team event, Park Daeun, Son Jeongmin, Jeon Suin, and Kim Eunseon represented Jeonnam Provincial Government and added a valuable bronze medal, fully demonstrating the strength of Jeonnam fencing.
Song Jin-ho, President of the Jeollanam-do Sports Council, stated, "It is a great honor for Jeonnam sports that our athletes not only achieved outstanding results at the national competition but were also selected for the national team.
