It has been confirmed that the police investigating Independent Assemblyman Lee Choonseok's alleged stock transactions under borrowed names have so far received a total of eight complaints and completed investigations into 45 individuals.
Park Hyunsoo, Acting Commissioner of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, stated at a regular press briefing on September 8, "We are continuing our investigation into stock transaction records and related matters."
The 45 individuals include suspects, witnesses, and complainants. The suspects remain Assemblyman Lee, who is accused of trading stocks under borrowed names, and two aides with the surname Cha who allegedly lent their names.
However, regarding reports that Assemblyman Lee purchased stocks worth more than 1 billion won under borrowed names, the police maintained, "We cannot confirm that."
A representative from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency explained, "As this is an ongoing investigation, it is difficult to confirm specific amounts or details," adding, "We are still in the process of analysis."
The investigation began last month after media captured Assemblyman Lee trading artificial intelligence (AI)-related stocks under aide Cha's name on the floor of the National Assembly.
They have admitted to violating the Real Name Financial Transactions Act in connection with the borrowed-name transactions, but deny allegations of violating the Capital Markets Act, such as using undisclosed information obtained from the National Policy Planning Committee or similar bodies.
