Ministry of National Defense Appoints Army Lieutenant General Kwon Daewon as Vice Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff

The Ministry of National Defense announced on September 8 that it has appointed Army Lieutenant General Kwon Daewon (ROTC Class 30) as the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Lieutenant General Kwon has previously served as Chief of Staff of the Ground Operations Command, Director of Civil-Military Operations at the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Commander of the 39th Infantry Division. The Ministry of National Defense stated that Lieutenant General Kwon, as an expert in joint operations and crisis management, has the capability to support the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and unite the morale of the armed forces.


Meanwhile, on September 1, the government nominated Jin Youngseung, Commander of the Strategic Command (Air Force Lieutenant General, Air Force Academy Class 39), as the new Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It has been about five years since an Air Force officer was appointed as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, following former Chairman Won Incheol in September 2020.
