AI Docent Service Follows Visitor Paths via Smart Glasses
The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the research team from the Department of Art & Technology at Sogang University will conduct a pilot operation of the XR (Extended Reality) and AI (Artificial Intelligence) convergence service, 'Xplore Museum,' at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Cheongju, from September 9 to November 12.

'Xplore Museum' is a term that combines 'Extended' from extended reality and 'explore,' offering a new museum experience that expands space and knowledge through XR and AI technologies. Reflecting the spatial characteristics of the Cheongju branch, which is a storage-type museum, the service introduces the storage area’s interior through XR, and also provides art information services based on generative AI. Information on 9,332 artworks out of approximately 12,000 pieces in the museum’s collection has been utilized in the system.
During this pilot operation, visitors wearing smart glasses will receive audio commentary on nearby artworks according to their movement paths. While viewing the artworks, visitors can also ask questions to the AI curator, who provides optimized answers based on the museum’s extensive data.
In front of the visible storage on the second floor, visitors can use XR equipment to explore the storage area’s interior in a three-dimensional virtual environment. The artworks are presented with realistic spatial depth and texture. The lives and artistic worlds of artists Park Sookeun and Lee Jungseob offer a unique experience that goes beyond viewing, making it feel as if one is stepping into the works themselves.
The Xplore Museum pilot operation takes place on-site at the Cheongju branch and is available every Tuesday to Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. XR storage tours can be reserved in advance through the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art’s website and are available in 20-minute sessions.
Kim Sunghee, Director of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, stated, "This pilot service combines the spatial characteristics of the museum’s storage with XR and AI technologies, allowing visitors to experience three elements-art appreciation, knowledge exploration, and personalized education-in a new way never experienced before. We will continue to develop and expand visitor services that integrate technology and art in the future."
