Hampyeong County, Jeollanam-do announced on September 8 that it awarded the Hwarang Order of Military Merit to a Korean War veteran in recognition of his service and dedication to the country.
The Medal of Military Merit Award Ceremony was held on September 4 at the Haknarae Cultural Center in the School District. The event was attended by Sergeant Lee Doohyeong (age 97), a hero of the Korean War, as well as Lee Sangik, Governor of Hampyeong County, representatives from local organizations and institutions, military officials, and approximately 70 family members and guests.
The Medal of Military Merit is awarded to soldiers and others who have demonstrated exceptional valor in combat. The ceremony was part of the "Belated Medal Award Project," a collaborative effort by the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and local governments to deliver medals to recipients or their descendants.
Sergeant Lee Doohyeong served as a non-commissioned officer from 1948 to 1954 and participated in the Korean War. In recognition of his achievements on the battlefield, he was awarded the Silver Star Hwarang Order of Military Merit and the Gold Star Hwarang Order of Military Merit in 1952. He later served as an officer from 1954 to 1958, continuing his service to the nation. He currently resides in the School District.
Governor Lee Sangik stated, "The peace and prosperity we enjoy today are possible thanks to the noble sacrifice and dedication of heroes who fought for our country. We will continue to honor veterans and promote a culture of respect for those who have served."
