Support for 18 Cities and Counties Through National and Provincial Funding
Early Detection and Restoration of Suspected Void Areas to Prevent Ground Subsidence
Gyeonggi Province, which is currently implementing the 'Special Safety Measures for Underground Construction Sites and Ground Subsidence,' will fully launch the '2025 Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Ground Survey Support Project for Cities and Counties' to prevent ground subsidence in urban areas.
A total of 2.16 billion won (1.08 billion won from the national government, 324 million won from the province, and 756 million won from cities and counties) will be invested in this year's project.
The province will support ground surveys covering a total of 1,080 kilometers in 16 cities and counties, including Suwon, Yongin, and Hwaseong. Each city and county will sequentially begin the project starting in October, aiming to complete the surveys within the year.
GPR surveys are an advanced non-destructive exploration method that sends electromagnetic waves underground, collects the reflected waves with a receiver, and then processes and interprets the data to visualize the underground structure and conditions.
Through this project, Gyeonggi Province aims to detect suspected voids early in urban areas and around large excavation sites, and to prevent large-scale ground subsidence accidents through proactive restoration measures. The project is significant in that it enables cities and counties to undertake work that would be difficult to manage alone by securing national funding and matching provincial funds.
Kang Sungseup, Director of Construction at Gyeonggi Province, stated, "We will supplement the financial limitations of cities and counties with national and provincial funding to operate a proactive survey and rapid restoration system," adding, "We will work closely with relevant agencies to prevent ground subsidence and ensure underground safety so that residents can feel secure."
