Donation from Uiseong County to Disaster Zones
A Gesture of Mutual Sharing and Solidarity
Public officials from the Uiseong County Office in North Gyeongsang Province have delivered a total of 60 million won in donations to six cities and counties across the country that were declared special disaster zones due to heavy rainfall, expressing their warm solidarity.
Gyeongbuk Uiseong County Office Officials Sent 60 Million Won in 'Hope Donations' Nationwide. Lee Jeonga, Deputy Governor of Uiseong County, personally visited Hapcheon County and handed over the donation to Kim Yoonchul, Governor of Hapcheon County.
On September 6, Uiseong County announced that this donation was raised voluntarily by public officials and that 10 million won was provided to each of the six areas designated as special disaster zones: Gapyeong County in Gyeonggi Province, Seosan City and Yesan County in South Chungcheong Province, Damyang County in South Jeolla Province, and Sancheong County and Hapcheon County in South Gyeongsang Province. The donations will be used to support the daily lives of affected residents and assist in recovery efforts.
The county did not stop at delivering donations. From July 28 to August 20, public officials, the volunteer center, and private organizations joined forces to support recovery efforts by providing manpower and equipment more than ten times.
In particular, Deputy County Governor Lee Jeonga personally visited Hapcheon County in South Gyeongsang Province to deliver the donation. She also donated 'Uiseong Jin Rice'-2,000 kilograms (200 bags of 10kg each)-prepared by the Angye-myeon Social Organization Council, further emphasizing the spirit of sharing.
This support is noteworthy as an act of "mutual sharing," intended to repay the kindness shown to Uiseong County from across the country during the massive wildfire that occurred in North Gyeongsang Province in March.
An official from Uiseong County stated, "Disasters can happen in any region, and helping each other in difficult times is the greatest strength," explaining that this shared understanding led to the collection of donations.
County Governor Kim Jusu said, "Thanks to the wildfire recovery support sent from all over the country, Uiseong County was able to recover quickly," adding, "I hope this donation will offer a small measure of hope and comfort to residents struggling with flood damage."
Uiseong County plans to continue practicing the values of "a community that lives together, a Korea that shares together," maintaining warm-hearted governance that shares the pain of neighbors.
This initiative by Uiseong County can be seen as an example of governance that goes beyond simply delivering financial aid, embodying reciprocity and mutual growth. By remembering the help they once received and giving back to society, the county demonstrates the power of solidarity that local governments can provide, as well as how the value of local communities can expand nationwide. In a reality where disasters are recurring, such voluntary sharing by local governments could become a vital pillar of national disaster response.
