"Impersonating Zuckerberg?"... Lawyer with Same Name Sues over Repeated Account Suspensions

Facebook Says Account Was Deactivated by Mistake... Now Restored

An American lawyer named Mark Zuckerberg, who shares the same name as the founder of Facebook, has filed a lawsuit against Meta, the company that operates Facebook, after his account was repeatedly suspended.

According to reports from the BBC and Indiana-based broadcaster WTHR-TV on September 4 (local time), the plaintiff is Mark Zuckerberg, a bankruptcy attorney who has been practicing in Indiana for 38 years. Over the past eight years, Zuckerberg's Facebook account has been suspended five times. Facebook suspended the attorney's account on the grounds that he was impersonating a celebrity by not using his real name.

"Impersonating Zuckerberg?"... Lawyer with Same Name Sues over Repeated Account Suspensions Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Meta (Facebook)

This misunderstanding arose because he shares the exact same name as Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta. The only difference between the two is their middle names. The attorney is Mark "Steven" Zuckerberg, while the CEO is Mark "Elliot" Zuckerberg.

The attorney expressed his frustration, saying, "This is no laughing matter," and added, "They (Facebook) even took my money."

"$11,000 in ads deleted"

The attorney claimed in a complaint filed with the Marion Superior Court in Indianapolis, Indiana, that he paid $11,000 (approximately 15 million won) to Facebook to run ads seeking clients, but Facebook unfairly deleted these ads. He argued that this incident constitutes "unauthorized breach of contract and negligence."

He compared the situation to "paying for a billboard on the highway, only for the person who took the money to immediately cover it with a large blanket so no one could see it." In an attempt to verify his identity, he submitted a photo ID, credit card, and several photos of his face to Facebook, but his account was not reinstated.

Facebook: "Account deactivated by mistake... now restored"

His account was restored only after he filed the lawsuit. Meta stated that the account had been deactivated by mistake. The company told WTHR-TV, "We have confirmed that Mark Zuckerberg's (the attorney's) account was mistakenly deactivated and it has now been restored. We appreciate his patience regarding this matter and are working to ensure this does not happen again."
