First Harvest of the New Sweet Potato Variety 'Jindami'
High Yields and Strong Resistance to Diseases and Pests
The Changwon Special City Agricultural Technology Center in South Gyeongsang Province announced on September 5 that the first harvest of the new sweet potato variety 'Jindami', bred by the Gyeongnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services, was successfully carried out in Buk-myeon, Uichang-gu.
The 'Jindami' sweet potato variety was developed by crossbreeding 'Dahomi', known for its high early yield, and 'Jinyulmi', a chestnut sweet potato variety prized for its excellent taste. As a result, 'Jindami' combines the strengths of both: high yields during cultivation and strong resistance to stem rot and nematodes.
After being planted in mid-May on a 2.4-hectare area in Buk-myeon, Uichang-gu, the first harvest took place on this day. The harvested sweet potatoes will first be used as seed potatoes for next year and are also planned for sale. They are expected to contribute to creating a new source of income for local farmers.
Park Yongjang, the farmer who successfully achieved this year’s first harvest, said, "I am delighted to have completed the first harvest with the Jindami variety, which boasts excellent taste and cultivation results. I will continue to grow Jindami next year so that it can become a new brand sweet potato for Changwon."
Kang Jongsun, Director of the Changwon Agricultural Technology Center, stated, "Congratulations on the first harvest of the Gyeongnam-bred new sweet potato variety 'Jindami'. We will continue to strengthen agricultural competitiveness by promoting the distribution of outstanding varieties in the future."
