The decision on whether to detain the group that attempted to kidnap children near an elementary school in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul is expected to be made as early as the afternoon of September 5.
The Seoul Western District Court held a pre-arrest interrogation (warrant review) at around 10:30 a.m. that day for two men in their twenties who are suspected of attempting to lure minors.
Arriving in front of the court at around 10:20 a.m., the suspects proceeded to the courtroom without answering reporters' questions such as "Do you admit to the charges?" and "Did you actually intend to kidnap the children?"
The two are accused of attempting to kidnap elementary school students three times near an elementary school and a parking lot in Hongeun-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, from around 3:30 p.m. on August 28. All of the child victims managed to escape the scene, and the crime ultimately failed.
The Seoul Seodaemun Police Station stated that although a report was received two days after the incident, no evidence of a crime was initially found.
However, after an additional report was filed, the police deployed a special investigation team, confirmed the actual crime, and apprehended the suspects on September 3.
The police explained, "At the time of the first report, the mother of one of the victims reported that the suspect vehicle was a white Starex, but the actual vehicle used was a gray Sorento. The difference in color and vehicle model made it difficult to accurately determine the facts."
The suspects reportedly told the police that "the elementary school students looked cute, so we did it as a prank," and that "it was amusing to see their surprised reactions."
