MOU Signed with WITU for 155mm Ammunition Quality Certification
Securing Certification to Supply MCS to the Polish Military
Hanwha Aerospace is partnering with local research institutions to enter the ammunition market in Europe, including Poland. The company aims to secure the quality and production capacity of 155mm ammunition for the K9 self-propelled howitzer and plans to address the ammunition supply shortages faced by European and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member states.
Hanwha Aerospace announced on September 5 that at the International Defence Industry Exhibition in Poland (MSPO 2025), its European subsidiary (HAEU) and the Polish Military Institute of Armament Technology (WITU) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for local quality certification of 155mm ammunition components, including MCS (Modular Charge System).
WITU is a national research institute under the Polish Ministry of Defense, responsible for research and development, testing, and evaluation of ammunition and warheads, as well as performance verification of weapon systems. The institute also conducts quality testing of the MCS, a key ammunition component that enables the 155mm warhead of self-propelled howitzers to be fired at designated ranges.
The signing ceremony was attended by Lee Buhwan, Head of the PGM Division at Hanwha Aerospace; Jacek, Head of Hanwha Aerospace Europe; and Pawel Szweklej, Director of WITU. The two sides agreed to cooperate on joint quality certification of 155mm ammunition components, exchange of scientific and technical personnel, and joint research and development initiatives.
A Hanwha Aerospace representative stated, "By obtaining local ammunition quality certification, we will not only ensure the supply of ammunition for the Krab self-propelled howitzers operated by the Polish military, but also establish a production base in Europe and expand our ammunition business to European and NATO countries in the future."
