First Solo Exhibition in Korea in 15 Years Since 2010
23 Works on Display Including New Pieces
Park Yosook Gallery is holding a solo exhibition of British artist Patrick Hughes (b. 1939) until September 30.
This exhibition marks Hughes' first solo show at the gallery in 15 years since 2010. It presents both his latest works and key pieces from his past, offering a comprehensive look at the world of 'Reverspective'-one of the most original visual experiments in contemporary art. A total of 23 works, including new pieces, will be on display.
Since creating his first Reverspective painting in 1964, Patrick Hughes has spent over 50 years developing this technique. Reverspective is a method in which traditional perspective is applied in reverse on wooden structures, so that the point which appears farthest away is physically positioned closest to the viewer. As a result, when viewers move in front of the artwork, the painting creates an optical illusion as if it is moving in the opposite direction.
This experience goes beyond a simple visual trick, posing the fundamental question: "How do we see the world, and how do we come to believe in it?" Hughes' works reveal the discord between perception and reality at the moment when the viewer's eyes and body send conflicting signals. Instead of losing their sense of direction, viewers are invited to experience a new 'visual truth.'
Hughes held his first solo exhibition in Mayfair, London in 1961. Since then, he has held approximately 200 solo exhibitions in major cities around the world, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, New York, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, and Zurich.
His works are part of the collections of leading museums and galleries in the UK, Germany, the United States, Denmark, and other countries, and he is recognized as an artist who has established a unique visual language in contemporary art history. He currently lives and works actively in Hoxton, East London.
For Hughes, art is not simply the act of creating images, but an experience that transforms the viewer's perception and their relationship with the world. This exhibition focuses on the visual and philosophical paradoxes revealed by Patrick Hughes' Reverspective. The gallery presents both his latest and major works, offering a multidimensional view of his artistic journey.
The 'moving paintings' are not merely optical illusions; they are new truths born from the discord between reality and perception. In front of these works, viewers lose their sense of direction, but gain a new perspective on both the world and themselves. This leads to questions and challenges for the entirety of contemporary visual culture.
A representative from Park Yosook Gallery stated, "Patrick Hughes' works are not just simple illusions-they challenge the way we experience the world and propose a new perspective. Through the paradox of movement, this exhibition will open up new dialogues at the boundary between art and perception. We hope this exhibition will be more than just an appreciation, but a special experience for visitors to see both the world and themselves in a new light."
