Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province will host the 23rd Suwon City Resident Autonomy Expo at the Suwon Convention Center Convention Hall on the 17th. The event is being held to commemorate the 30th anniversary of local autonomy under the direct election system, share its achievements, and promote a resident-led culture of self-governance.
The event will begin with a performance, followed by an awards ceremony, opening remarks and congratulatory speeches, and a vision performance celebrating the 30th anniversary of local autonomy. Eight individuals recognized for their contributions to the revitalization of resident autonomy and seven 'heroes of local autonomy in practice' will receive commendations and plaques of appreciation.
Twelve teams will participate in the Resident Autonomy Outstanding Clubs Competition, showcasing a variety of performances such as dance, choir, and traditional Korean percussion. In addition, eight of the YouTube Shorts (short videos) created by 17 districts that advanced to the finals will be screened.
In the exhibition section, a village development blueprint displaying the autonomy plans of 44 districts will be on display, allowing visitors to see all the development concepts at a glance.
The 'Local Autonomy Decentralization Policy Forum' will also take place. Academics, research institutions, and civic groups will participate to reflect on the achievements of 30 years of local autonomy, discuss constitutional amendments for decentralization, and explore the future direction of local governance.
A Suwon City official stated, "This expo is an opportunity to reflect on the significance of the 30th anniversary of local autonomy and to share the achievements and value of resident self-governance," adding, "We hope it will serve as an occasion for citizens to come together and build a culture of autonomy where they are the true protagonists."
