Expressing Time Experienced from Spring to Summer Through Color
Showcasing 15 Paintings
Choi Jeonga Gallery is holding a solo exhibition by Melody Park titled 'Spring Snow to Summer Watermelon' until September 27. The exhibition features a total of 15 paintings in which the artist has recorded, through color, the time she directly experienced and sensed from spring to summer this year.
Before becoming a painter, Melody Park had a unique background as a baker. Her experience in closely observing the characteristics and physical variables of ingredients, and creating taste and texture through optimal combinations while baking, has translated into her approach to painting-exploring the materiality of color through pigment density and texture, the pressure of her hand, and the movement of her tools. Just as tiny molecular fragments come together to determine the viscosity and elasticity of dough, her experiments with various solid and powdered paints allow color to be perceived as a tangible, real material.
This solo exhibition is based on her own artistic theme: "The season is the act of seeing the change of time through color." It reveals the subtle differences in color felt within the repeated flow of the seasons. Rather than simply reflecting the cyclical changes of climate, the non-visual sensations she perceives-such as temperature, light, air, and mood-are translated into color, standing as independent elements that support the canvas. Fragments of her daily life are thus condensed into the materiality of color and imprinted onto the canvas.
The colors created by Melody Park go beyond mere painting materials and exist on the canvas as independent landscapes in themselves. Sometimes a single color encompasses the whole, while at other times, fragments of various colors come together to create a harmonious world. This process is akin to metaphorically expressing human life through seasonal changes: by exploring color every day, she senses the passage of time and captures fleeting moments of her ever-changing inner world.
