Mayor Yuk Donghan and Local Lawmakers Join Forces for Additional Funding
Chuncheon City, Gangwon Province, has secured a budget of 92.7 billion won for major new and ongoing projects in the 2026 government budget proposal.
On September 4, Chuncheon City announced that, including projects currently under open competition and those receiving annual national funding, it has provisionally secured approximately 590 billion won. Following this year’s record-high national funding of 545.3 billion won, there are high expectations for surpassing the 600 billion won mark next year, which is a challenging new target.
There are a total of 14 new projects, with 9 billion won allocated in next year’s budget out of a total of 72.4 billion won in national funding, while the remainder will be provided over multiple years.
Major new projects include: △ Construction of the Southeast Region Integrated Welfare Center (total national funding of 10 billion won, 400 million won allocated for next year); △ Construction of the Food Tech Research Support Center (total national funding of 2.6 billion won, 600 million won allocated for next year); △ Establishment of Green Bioindustry Material Industrialization Facilities (total national funding of 4.9 billion won, 200 million won allocated for next year); △ Maintenance of Circular Landfill Facilities (total national funding of 23.1 billion won, 400 million won allocated for next year); and △ Package Support for the Toegye Changchon Agro-Industrial Complex (total national funding of 8 billion won, 2.5 billion won allocated for next year). For ongoing projects, 39 items have been allocated a total of 83.7 billion won.
Meanwhile, the second Gyeongchun National Highway, a national project, passed the feasibility review this year, resulting in 81 billion won in national funding being allocated for next year. The Chuncheon-Sokcho East-West Express Railway also received 169.6 billion won in funding, making the expansion of the regional transportation network centered on Chuncheon more tangible.
Since the launch of the 8th popularly elected administration, Chuncheon City has significantly increased its annual national funding. The amount, which initially fell short of 400 billion won, was raised to over 500 billion won in 2024, and reached 545.3 billion won in 2025.
In particular, Mayor Yuk Donghan has taken the lead in securing national funding by personally visiting central government ministries and the National Assembly dozens of times to present key issues. Both internal and external evaluations credit his extensive government network and persistent persuasion for these achievements. Collaboration with National Assembly members Heo Young and Han Kiho also played a significant role in this process. The city plans to secure an additional 10 billion won or more in national funding through close cooperation during next year’s National Assembly budget review.
Yuk Donghan, Mayor of Chuncheon, stated, "I will fulfill my promise made at the beginning of my term to serve as a good instrument for citizens by securing national funding."
The final government budget proposal will be confirmed after review by the National Assembly on December 2.
