As of the end of August this year, the population of Daejeon City increased by 2,439 compared to the end of last year.

This marks a clear turnaround from the population decline that had persisted since 2013, with a distinct upward trend emerging this year. Notably, Daejeon has recorded a net influx of residents for four consecutive months since May, signaling a turning point in population growth.

According to resident registration population statistics from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the population of Daejeon City at the end of August 2025 stood at 1,441,596. While Daejeon had previously experienced a net outflow to the Seoul metropolitan area and other cities, the situation has changed this year.

From January to August, 58,226 people moved into Daejeon from other regions, while 54,411 people moved out, resulting in a net influx of 3,815 residents.

The most common reason for moving to Daejeon was work-related factors such as employment or business, followed by family reasons (marriage, joining or separating households), education, and housing or residential environment. This demonstrates the effectiveness of Daejeon City’s policies, including job creation, improvements in living conditions, and expanded support for education and housing.

By age group, people in their twenties accounted for the largest share of new residents, with 24,020 individuals, representing 41.2% of all newcomers. They were followed by people in their thirties (11,079) and teenagers (5,087). This indicates that Daejeon is transforming into a city chosen by younger generations, as it strengthens support for youth employment, education, and housing.

Since the launch of its 8th popularly elected administration, Daejeon City has made comprehensive efforts in various areas, including: developing 5.35 million pyeong of industrial complexes; increasing the number of listed companies to 66 and achieving a market capitalization of 76 trillion won (the second highest among metropolitan cities); attracting large-scale corporate investments; creating youth jobs; strengthening startup support; expanding cooperation with universities and research institutions; increasing youth support; supplying Daejeon-style youth housing; providing marriage incentives for young couples; and fostering the "Daejeon Zero O’Clock Festival" as Korea’s top festival, among other initiatives to improve the economy, welfare, and quality of life.

Lee Jangwoo, Mayor of Daejeon, stated, "The upward trend in Daejeon's population is more than just a number. The increase in young people moving to Daejeon is proof that the city is establishing itself as a place where future generations can pursue their dreams."

He added, "We will continue to invest in all areas, including jobs, housing, and culture, to make Daejeon a city where everyone wants to live and a city of choice."
