"Preventive Measures Remain Inadequate Amid Frequent Incidents"
Some Companies Face Repeated Hacking Attacks
"Misguided View of Security Investment as Unnecessary Cost Needs Reconsideration"
President Lee Jaemyung has ordered the swift preparation of institutional reform measures to enable strong responses, including punitive fines, against companies such as telecommunications and financial firms that repeatedly experience hacking incidents.
During his opening remarks at the chief aides' meeting held at the Yongsan presidential office on the 4th, President Lee stated, "Hacking incidents continue to occur at telecommunications and financial companies, causing great anxiety among the public." He added, "The real problem is that, despite frequent incidents, the responses and countermeasures remain extremely inadequate. Some companies have reportedly been hacked repeatedly in the same way."
President Lee also remarked, "We need to reconsider whether the mistaken perception of security investments for personal information protection as unnecessary costs is at the root of these incidents." He urged, "Relevant authorities should actively consider conducting proactive investigations to determine if there are any hidden additional damages, and I ask that efforts be made to improve systems to strengthen companies' security capabilities."
Meanwhile, Lotte Card recently reported to the Financial Supervisory Service that it was subjected to a hacking attack last month. During a server inspection, malicious code was detected on three servers and subsequently removed. On August 31, traces of an attempt by a hacker to leak data from the online payment server were also confirmed.
