On September 3, Jeollanam-do announced that a National Assembly forum was held at the National Assembly Museum under the theme "Korea's Carbon Neutrality and the Role of the Southern Coastal and South Central Regions," reaffirming its commitment to carbon neutrality and to attracting the 33rd United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP33).
The event was co-hosted by Jeollanam-do, Yeosu City, and 12 members of the National Assembly (Seo Youngkyo, Lee Gaeho, Song Okjoo, Joo Cheolhyeon, Min Hyeongbae, Lim Ohkyung, Cho Gyeweon, Kim Moonsu, Kwon Hyangyeop, Moon Geumjoo, Park Seonwon, and Chun Haram). It was jointly organized by the Carbon Neutrality Practice Alliance, Seoul Eco Club, and ICLEI, drawing over 200 participants, including residents of Jeollanam-do and Yeosu, as well as civic groups from the southern coastal and south central regions, making it a great success.
This was the third time the forum was held at the National Assembly, and it explored the direction of Korea's carbon neutrality in the era of climate crisis, as well as the role of the southern coastal and south central regions in leading carbon neutrality efforts.
In particular, the attending members of the National Assembly expressed strong agreement with the forum's theme, emphasizing the necessity of the southern coastal and south central regions in Korea's transition to a carbon-neutral society.
During the expert discussion, the session began with presentations on "Climate Change and Carbon Neutrality" by Jeon Eui-chan, Endowed Chair Professor at Sejong University, and Oh Seongnam, Special Professor at Soongsil University. The discussion was chaired by Yoon Wontae, Chair of the ESG Education Development Committee of the Jeollanam-do Office of Education, and featured active debate among Park Yeonhee, Head of the ICLEI Korea Office; Lee Jongoh, Secretary General of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Korea Committee; Kim Minyoung, former Director of the Seoul Institute of Health and Environment; and Lee Sanghoon, Chair of the Yeosu Declaration Implementation Committee, focusing on carbon neutrality and the role of the southern coastal and south central regions in responding to climate change.
Governor Kim Youngrok stated, "Jeollanam-do is implementing strong carbon neutrality policies, such as building offshore wind and solar power complexes and RE100 industrial complexes, with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030."
He added, "We will continue to take the lead in preserving and restoring coastal ecosystems and do our utmost to attract the 33rd United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties. Korea has now become a proud advanced nation both economically and culturally. Based on this, if local governments in the southern coastal and south central regions, as well as civic groups in Jeollanam-do and Gyeongsangnam-do, unite in friendly competition, we can surely succeed in hosting the event."
