Gyeonggi Province reported that 12,000 newlywed couples applied for a program that provides 1 million won to young newlyweds.
On September 3, Gyeonggi Province announced that a total of 12,029 couples applied for the "Gyeonggi Youth Marriage Support Program," which provides 1 million won to 2,650 young newlywed couples, resulting in a competition ratio of 4.5 to 1.
The Gyeonggi Youth Marriage Support Program is a participatory budget initiative that was finalized after a review by the Youth Policy Coordination Committee, based on a proposal from a youth participation organization last year.
The eligibility requirements are as follows: as of the application date, both spouses must be registered residents of Gyeonggi Province; both must be young adults born between January 1, 1985, and December 31, 2006; the marriage registration must have been completed after January 1, 2025; and the couple's combined income for 2024 must not exceed 80 million won. All four conditions must be met.
Gyeonggi Province accepted applications through Gyeonggi Civil Service 24 (gg24.gg.go.kr) from August 1 to August 29. The average age of male applicants was 31.8 years, while the average age for female applicants was 30.5 years. The average combined income was 50.78 million won. By region, Suwon had the highest number of applicants with 1,217 couples, followed by Hwaseong (1,018 couples) and Goyang (880 couples). Gapyeong County had the lowest number of applicants, with 32 couples.
Gyeonggi Province plans to verify the eligibility and submitted documents of applicants, and will select the final recipients by reflecting both the length of residency in Gyeonggi Province over the past five years and the couple’s combined income from the previous year. The selected 2,650 couples will receive 1 million won each starting in mid-November.
Kim Sunhwa, Director of Youth Opportunity Division at Gyeonggi Province, said, "The results of the recruitment show that there is a very high demand for social and economic support for marriage among young people," adding, "We will continue to reflect the needs of young people in our policies going forward."
