SK Hynix Leads with 38.7% Market Share,
Samsung Electronics Follows at 32.7%
SK Hynix, which has secured a leading position in the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) market, maintained its number one spot in the global DRAM market for the second quarter in a row, following its first-quarter dominance this year.
According to market research firm TrendForce on September 2, global DRAM market revenue in the second quarter of this year reached 31.63 billion dollars, marking a 17.1% increase compared to the previous quarter. TrendForce attributed this growth to rising DRAM prices, a steady increase in shipment volumes, and growing demand for HBM.
SK Hynix posted second-quarter revenue of 12.23 billion dollars, a sharp 25.8% increase from the previous quarter. Its market share rose by 2.7 percentage points, from 36% in the first quarter to 38.7% in the second quarter. While the average selling price (ASP) increase was limited due to higher shipments of low-priced DDR4 memory, the company outperformed its shipment targets, resulting in strong performance. With this, SK Hynix, which overtook Samsung Electronics to claim the top spot on a quarterly basis for the first time in the first quarter of this year, has now maintained its number one position for two consecutive quarters.
Samsung Electronics recorded second-quarter revenue of 10.35 billion dollars, a 13.7% increase from the previous quarter. However, its market share fell by 1 percentage point, from 33.7% to 32.7%.
Micron, ranked third, saw its average selling price decline despite increased shipments, resulting in second-quarter revenue of 6.95 billion dollars, up just 5.7% from the previous quarter. Its market share dropped by 2.3 percentage points, from 24.3% to 22%.
TrendForce analyzed the global memory market by stating, "Due to strong demand from PC and smartphone manufacturers as well as cloud service providers, DRAM prices have returned to an upward trend."
