President Lee to Preside Over Open Debate
Focusing on Artificial Intelligence, International Peace, and Security

President Lee Jaemyung will attend and deliver a speech at the upcoming United Nations (UN) General Assembly on the 23rd. He will also become the first South Korean president to preside over an open debate at the UN Security Council.


On September 2, Kang Yujeong, spokesperson for the Presidential Office, announced during a briefing at the Presidential Office in Yongsan that President Lee will attend the 80th UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting, which will be held in New York, United States, on the 23rd. According to Spokesperson Kang, President Lee is scheduled to deliver the seventh keynote address during the first session, which will take place between 9:00 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. local time on the 23rd, and his speech will last for 15 minutes.

Spokesperson Kang emphasized, "Through his speech, President Lee will share South Korea's journey in overcoming challenges to democracy and present our government's vision and policies on global issues, including matters concerning the Korean Peninsula."


Additionally, President Lee will become the first South Korean president to preside over an open debate at the UN Security Council as its chair. The open debate will focus on the themes of artificial intelligence (AI), international peace, and security. Spokesperson Kang explained that the meeting will center on discussing the impact of rapid advancements in AI technology on international peace and security.


Spokesperson Kang stated, "With this year marking the 80th anniversary of the founding of the UN, international attention will be higher than ever," adding, "Through his participation, President Lee will strengthen solidarity with the international community and engage in various diplomatic activities to elevate South Korea's status as a responsible global leader."
