No Interruptions for Water Play Areas, Sports Facilities, and Dog Playgrounds Even During Heavy Rainfall
Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Shin Sangjin) announced on September 2 that, thanks to the ongoing local stream dredging project that has been implemented since 2023, there has not been a single instance of stream flooding even during recent periods of heavy rainfall.

To realize the eighth municipal administration’s pledge of “stream maintenance for disaster safety,” the city has carried out phased dredging of sediment along the entire length of the Tancheon stream from 2023 to 2024, dramatically improving the stream’s water flow capacity.
In the past, the Tancheon stream would overflow every rainy season, causing frequent flood damage such as facility destruction. However, after the completion of dredging, the water flow has become smooth, transforming the stream into a safe waterway with zero instances of flooding.
Achieving zero flooding in the Tancheon stream has not only prevented disasters but has also significantly enhanced administrative efficiency for the city. The substantial manpower and budget that were previously required for annual flood recovery can now be saved.
Additionally, with the elimination of flood risks, citizen facilities established along the Tancheon stream-including water play areas, sports facilities, and dog playgrounds-can now be operated more stably and without interruption.
This means that citizens can use the Tancheon stream more safely and comfortably than ever before.
Shin Sangjin, Mayor of Seongnam City, stated, “To prepare for the increasing frequency of heavy rainfall caused by recent climate anomalies, we plan to conduct regular dredging operations every year in sections prone to sediment buildup.”
Building on the success of this dredging project, Seongnam City will continue to prioritize citizen safety through ongoing stream management and will spare no effort in creating a livable urban environment.
