Gas Leak Near Yugang-ri, Yeonil-eup, Nam-gu
Roads Controlled and Safety Measures Enforced
Authorities Hold Situation Assessment Meeting and Discuss Response Plans
On August 31, a gas leak was reported in the area of 469-49 Yugangri, Yeonil-eup, Namgu, Pohang City, prompting a swift response from relevant authorities.
The day before the report, on August 30, a minor gas leak was discovered on August 31 at the outlet of a drainage pipe that had been installed to remove water following a water supply leak near Yugangri.
Gas pipelines are buried at the leak point, and on September 1, Gyeongbuk Province, Pohang City, Pohang Namgu Police Station, Pohang Namgu Fire Station, Korea Gas Corporation, Korea Gas Safety Corporation, and related companies held an emergency situation assessment meeting.
During the meeting, each agency discussed recovery plans and response measures, and the exact leak location is currently under investigation. It will take about six days to connect and restore the gas leak area using a bypass pipe.
According to a Pohang City official, "Currently, roads near the gas leak point in Yugangri are being controlled, and we are providing guidance to residents in Yeonil-eup and Hyogok-dong to minimize safety accidents and inconvenience to traffic. Although the risk of explosion due to the gas leak is significantly low, as a precaution, we plan to quickly install gas detectors near the leak site and monitor the situation regularly."
In addition, on September 2, a second countermeasure meeting will be held to discuss the progress of recovery by each agency and future response plans. Gyeongbuk Province, Pohang City, and related agencies will operate a joint response team and do their utmost to manage the situation until the incident is fully resolved.
