According to NHK and Kyodo News on September 1, at around 1:35 p.m., a witness reported that "a woman was lying on the road covered in blood and a man had fled" in Setagaya Ward. Police dispatched to the scene found a Korean woman in her 40s, identified as Ms. A, unconscious and transported her to the hospital. However, Ms. A died about an hour and a half later, around 3 p.m. It was reported that she had a wound on her neck believed to be caused by a stabbing.
Based on witness statements and nearby CCTV footage, police identified a man wearing a black short-sleeved shirt and long pants as the suspect and launched a search. The man, a Korean national in his 30s, attempted to flee immediately after the incident but was apprehended by police at Tokyo Haneda Airport. The weapon used in the crime has not yet been found.
According to local media, the victim had sought help at a nearby police box on the night of August 29 after arguing with her boyfriend over a breakup. Police are investigating the case as a murder resulting from dating violence, not a random attack, and have expanded their investigation.
The incident occurred in a busy commercial district about 500 meters from Komazawa-daigaku Station. Immediately after the incident, the Setagaya Board of Education issued emergency measures to prohibit students from returning to elementary and middle schools in the area, and students who remained at school were instructed to delay their departure for safety reasons.
