"Ensuring Safe Water Supply for Citizens"... Yangsan City Inspects Response to Algal Bloom

Comprehensive Water Quality Inspection and Enhanced Response System
On-Site Administrative Action for Algal Bloom Management

On the afternoon of September 1, Yangsan City, South Gyeongsang Province, conducted on-site administrative inspections by visiting the water intake and purification plants in the new city area. This action was taken to ensure the safe production and supply of tap water in response to the recent occurrence of green algae in the Nakdong River area.

This on-site inspection was organized to proactively address the recent green algae phenomenon in the Nakdong River and to ensure the stable supply of high-quality tap water that citizens can trust. The focus was on relieving public concerns and re-examining the systematic water quality management system by directly checking the safety of every stage, from the water source to the purification process.

In particular, to secure safe drinking water during the summer algal bloom season, a step-by-step response strategy was established. Mayor Na Dongyeon of Yangsan City personally inspected the site and took active administrative measures to ensure the safety of citizens.

Mayor Na emphasized, "While algal blooms can be seen as a natural phenomenon, they are directly related to the safety of our citizens and therefore cannot be neglected. We will continue to strengthen our water quality monitoring system and modernize purification facilities to ensure that, under any circumstances, we can provide clean and safe tap water that citizens can drink with confidence."

Previously, during the green algae outbreaks in May and June, the water intake and purification plants in Yangsan City completed advance inspections, such as installing algae inflow prevention devices and activated carbon injection systems, to reinforce the purification process and ensure the supply of safe drinking water. Field personnel are currently monitoring water quality around the clock in emergency mode, responding immediately to even the slightest changes.

A city official stated, "Although the current level of algal bloom is at the alert stage, it is being thoroughly blocked during the purification process, and there are no issues with the tap water being supplied. We will continue to strengthen advanced purification operations and strictly manage the coagulation process at the purification plant, including appropriate coagulant or auxiliary agent injection, since large-scale algae inflow can cause poor coagulation and sedimentation."

Yangsan City plans to work closely with the Ministry of Environment and other relevant agencies to continuously monitor and respond to the algal bloom situation, ensuring the supply of clean and safe tap water.
