Development of Cargo Management Fuel Efficiency Indicators
Improved Fuel Efficiency and Reduced Crew Workload
HD Hyundai announced on September 1 that it will conduct a demonstration of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based cargo operation solution for liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers in collaboration with SK Shipping.

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, and HD Hyundai Marine Solutions, all shipbuilding affiliates of HD Hyundai, recently signed an agreement with SK Shipping at the Ulsan shipyard to jointly develop the next-generation 'AI Cargo Operation Solution (AI-CHS).' AI-CHS, a system developed by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, predicts boil-off gas (BOG) generated during the operation and berthing of LNG carriers and supports its efficient distribution to reliquefaction facilities, generators, and main engines. Traditionally, these decisions relied on the experience of skilled crew members, but AI now supplements the decision-making process, enabling even less experienced crew to manage cargo operations safely and efficiently.
HD Hyundai plans to install this solution on SK Shipping's 174,000-cubic-meter-class LNG carrier to collect data and conduct demonstrations on cargo operation fuel efficiency assessment, fuel usage optimization, and streamlining crew work. An HD Hyundai representative stated, "By strengthening our AI-based smart ship solutions, we aim to enhance the convenience of vessel and fleet operations and lead the eco-friendly ship market." An SK Shipping representative added, "By combining decades of cargo management experience with AI, we will simultaneously achieve improved fuel efficiency indicators, safety, and operational efficiency."
