Yongin City Strengthens Discharge Standards for Individual Sewage Facilities in Baegam and Wonsam Areas

Stronger Discharge Standards
for Individual Sewage Treatment Facilities
in Baegam-myeon and Parts of Wonsam-myeon

The discharge water quality standards for individual sewage treatment facilities will be strengthened across Baegam-myeon and parts of Wonsam-myeon in Cheoin-gu, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi Province.

Yongin City Strengthens Discharge Standards for Individual Sewage Facilities in Baegam and Wonsam Areas

On September 1, Yongin City announced that it will implement a regional development load allocation plan containing these measures in accordance with the Han River watershed total water pollution load management system, starting this month.

The city explained that this preemptive measure is being taken to preserve water quality, as the demand for total phosphorus (T-P) development load is expected to increase due to the construction of the "Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex" and urban development in the Wonsam-myeon area.

The target area is the "Cheongmi A Unit Watershed" within the Han River watershed. This includes the entire Baegam-myeon in Cheoin-gu, as well as Saam-ri, Jwahang-ri, Maeng-ri, Mipyung-ri, Gajaewol-ri, and Duchang-ri in Wonsam-myeon.

The city noted that a shortage of total pollution load could hinder industrial complex and urban development projects. The Cheongmi A watershed, where the standards are being strengthened, is projected to face a shortage of total phosphorus development load by the end of the second phase in 2030.

With this plan revision, the total phosphorus discharge water quality concentration standards for individual sewage treatment facilities subject to total water pollution load allocation in the area will be tightened by 50% compared to the previous plan, with more detailed standards applied according to daily treatment capacity.

For facilities with a daily treatment capacity of less than 50㎥, the standard will change from 4mg/L to 2mg/L. For facilities with a capacity of 50㎥ or more but less than 200㎥, it will change from 2mg/L to 1mg/L. For facilities with a capacity of 200㎥ or more, the standard will be strengthened from 1mg/L to 0.5mg/L, and such facilities will be designated and managed as assigned facilities.

Further details can be found in the "Phase 2 Yongin City Han River Watershed Total Water Pollution Load Management Regional Development Load Allocation Plan," which is posted on the Yongin City Hall website.

A city official stated, "We will establish efficient plans to secure development load and ensure the smooth progress of urban development and industrial complex projects."
