Sejong City Welcomes Launch of National Symbolic Zone Master Plan Competition
Continued Advocacy for Constitutional Amendment and Completion of the Administrative Capital
On August 29, Sejong City issued a statement welcoming, together with its 400,000 citizens, the official launch of the 'International Competition for the National Symbolic Zone Master Plan.' This marks the unveiling of the roadmap and blueprint for Sejong as the administrative capital.
The Multifunctional Administrative City Construction Agency officially announced on August 28 that it will launch the international competition for the master plan on September 2, aiming to develop approximately 2.1 million square meters within the S-1 living zone (Sejong-dong) of the Happy City as the National Symbolic Zone.
The city evaluated this as the government's positive response to Sejong's continuous requests to construct the Presidential Sejong Office and the National Assembly Sejong Office Building within the current administration's term, as well as a clear expression of its strong commitment to completing the administrative capital.
Previously, the city had strongly urged the government and political circles for the prompt construction of the Presidential Sejong Office and the National Assembly Sejong Office Building through various channels, including a meeting between the President and provincial governors held on the 1st of this month.
In particular, once the National Symbolic Zone master plan is established, the location, site configuration, layout of major buildings, and facade design of the Presidential Sejong Office will be concretized, and an urban design proposal for the National Assembly Sejong Office Building site will also be presented. Based on this, the city plans to promptly hold separate architectural design competitions for both the Presidential Sejong Office and the National Assembly Sejong Office Building. This will reveal the concrete substance of these two core projects essential to completing the administrative capital.
The city also announced its plan to actively support the timely construction of the Presidential Sejong Office and the National Assembly Sejong Office Building as architectural symbols representing the Republic of Korea's rise as a global leader.
Furthermore, the city intends to actively propose to the government the following measures: the constitutional amendment to officially designate Sejong as the administrative capital; the complete relocation of the presidential office and the National Assembly; the relocation of central administrative agencies that have not yet moved from the Seoul metropolitan area to Sejong; and the strengthening of administrative capital functions through the relocation of public institutions.
Additionally, the city plans to enhance transportation infrastructure befitting its administrative capital status by promoting the construction of the Chungcheong Region Metropolitan Railway (CTX), the establishment of metropolitan Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines, and other improvements to the regional transportation network.
Welcoming the start of the international competition for the National Symbolic Zone master plan, Sejong City reaffirmed its determination to focus all its efforts on the swift completion of the administrative capital as an essential means for the sustainable future of the Republic of Korea.
