This council meeting was attended by Kim Jintae, the governor and chairman of the council, as well as representatives from defense industry-related companies, academic experts, and high-ranking officials with military backgrounds. They discussed strategies to address key issues such as attracting defense agencies, fostering small but strong defense companies, and bringing in a defense industry innovation cluster.

The province announced its Gangwon Advanced Defense Industry Development Strategy in May 2023 and launched the Defense Industry Council in November of the same year. In 2024, it established the Gangwon Defense Venture Center and declared the defense industry as the province's sixth future industry, thus laying the groundwork for further growth.

This year, the province has accelerated the creation of a Gangwon-style defense economy ecosystem by launching the Gangwon Venture Center project in earnest, expanding the number of partner companies to 43, and establishing the Defense Economy Task Force. In addition, Gangwon has signed a 60 billion won investment agreement with Korea Precision Materials Industry, and is in the process of attracting the Defense Science Research Institute Marine Research Center in Donghae and the Defense Technology Quality Institute's Defense Protection Test Site in Chuncheon.

Going forward, the province plans to increase the number of Gangwon Defense Venture Center partner companies to 80 by 2027, strengthen step-by-step professional training and marketing support for entry into the defense market, and accelerate efforts to attract a defense industry innovation cluster.

Governor Kim Jintae stated, "There have been many changes in just two years since the council was launched," adding, "We have declared the Gangwon-style defense industry as our sixth future industry and newly introduced the concept of a defense economy."

He continued, "Gangwon Province, which has long made sacrifices and concessions, is now preparing in earnest for the defense economy and defense industry. I ask for your valuable advice."
