Sangju City in North Gyeongsang Province has finally established a foundation to institutionalize the long-standing aspirations of people with disabilities.

The inaugural general meeting of the Sangju City Disabled Sports Association, held on the 27th in the main conference room of Sangju City Hall, is being recognized not merely as the launch of a new organization, but as a starting point to elevate the quality of life and sports welfare for people with disabilities to a new level.
◆ Establishment, previously thwarted multiple times, becomes reality through the determination of Mayor Kang Youngseok
Until now, the disabled community in Sangju had made several attempts to establish a sports association, only to face repeated setbacks and disappointment. However, this inaugural general meeting became a reality thanks to the strong will and decisive leadership of Mayor Kang Youngseok, who emphasized that it was "not a choice, but a necessity."
During the meeting, Mayor Kang stated, "Today marks a historic day, a new turning point for sports for people with disabilities in Sangju City," and stressed, "Now that the long-awaited establishment of the sports association has finally been achieved, we look forward to restoring self-esteem and strengthening the community through sports."
◆ Finalization of 'Board of Directors and Bylaws' for systematic management
At the meeting, Kang Youngseok was appointed as the ex officio president, and four agenda items were approved: enactment of bylaws and various regulations, appointment of executives, appointment of the secretary-general, and the 2025 business plan and budget proposal.
In particular, to ensure systematic and stable management, a board structure was established with 24 directors and auditors. Park Geunseop was appointed as the senior vice president, Kim Kyunghong as the appointed vice president, and Park Eunok and Kim Janghwan as ex officio vice presidents. An Minki and Jo Gangjae were appointed as auditors, while Park Chayoung was named secretary-general to oversee practical operations.
◆ Eighth establishment in North Gyeongsang Province ... "Driving expansion of sports for people with disabilities"
The Sangju City Disabled Sports Association is the eighth to be established in North Gyeongsang Province, following Gyeongsan City and Uljin County. This inaugural general meeting is expected to serve as a turning point, not only by creating a new organization, but also by expanding opportunities for sports participation among people with disabilities, broadening the base for community sports, and enhancing inclusivity within the local community.
Based on the resolutions passed at the inaugural meeting, the city plans to complete the approval process and hold an official launch ceremony this November. After its launch, Sangju City aims to promote both elite and community sports for people with disabilities, striving to make the city a nationwide leading model for sports welfare for the disabled.
