On the 28th, President Lee posted on the social networking service X, "I commend Sergeant Lee Jin Woong for his sharp intuition and keen observation in swiftly responding to a voice phishing crime."

He then shared a news article reporting Sergeant Lee's actions in apprehending a cash collection agent involved in voice phishing while on vacation, writing, "He has clearly demonstrated how a strong sense of duty can have a profoundly positive impact on society." He added, "We are deeply grateful that, thanks to such dedication, we are able to enjoy our peaceful daily lives."

On August 13, Sergeant Lee Jin Woong apprehended a man in his 30s, suspected of being a cash collection agent for a voice phishing scheme, in front of an apartment shopping complex in Jung-gu, Daejeon.

While on vacation, Sergeant Lee was waiting in his car after ordering food at the shopping complex when he noticed a suspicious man taking photos of the building and surveying the area. He immediately followed him. Within the apartment complex, he directly witnessed a citizen handing over a paper bag to the man and promptly intervened to detain him.

Inside the paper bag in question was 17 million won in cash. The victim initially did not believe Sergeant Lee was a police officer, as he was dressed in plain clothes, but after connecting the victim to his fellow officers by phone and persuading them for 10 minutes, he was able to prevent the crime.

The responding police officers recovered the cash and returned it to the victim. The arrested man, identified as Mr. A, is currently under investigation for violating the Act on the Refund of Damages from Telecommunication Fraud. During the investigation, he reportedly stated that he had come to do a part-time job for which he would be paid 50,000 won per case.

Meanwhile, on the same day, the government held a pan-government voice phishing response task force meeting, presided over by Yoon Chang Ryeol, Chief of the Office for Government Policy Coordination, and announced a comprehensive plan to eradicate voice phishing. The plan includes measures to legally require financial institutions to compensate for damages caused by voice phishing.
