Discussion Held on Policies to Promote a Culture of Enjoying Hanbok
Daejeon City Council Considers Preferential Admission for Hanbok Wearers
Debate on Designating "Daejeon Hanbok Day" and Effective Support Measures
The Daejeon City Council has discussed the implementation of preferential policies, such as reducing a certain percentage of admission or viewing fees for individuals wearing traditional Hanbok when using performance or exhibition facilities established and operated by the city.
On August 28, the Daejeon City Council held a policy forum in the council's communication room under the theme "Establishing a Culture of Enjoying Hanbok," sharing ideas on ways to promote the wearing of Hanbok to inherit and develop traditional culture.
This forum, chaired by Councilman Park Jongsun (Independent, Yuseong District 1) of the Welfare and Environment Committee, garnered attention by discussing the implementation of preferential policies, such as reducing a certain percentage of admission or viewing fees for individuals wearing traditional Hanbok when using performance or exhibition facilities established and operated by the city.
There was also a heated debate among panelists regarding the designation of "Daejeon Hanbok Day."
This forum was organized in light of the need to review the progress of the "Daejeon Hanbok Wearing Promotion and Support Ordinance," which was sponsored by Councilman Park Jongsun and enacted and implemented in December 2023, and to concretize its provisions into effective policies that citizens can truly feel.
Professor Park Jungha of Joongbu University, who delivered the keynote presentation, emphasized the need for differentiated tourism products that combine Daejeon's scientific infrastructure with Hanbok culture, envisioning sustainable tourism for the city.
Kim Hyeyoung, Chairperson of the Daejeon Institute of Traditional Culture, who participated as a panelist, mentioned the need for policies that encourage not only traditional Hanbok but also daily Hanbok and fusion Hanbok. Oh Gukhui, Head of the Korea Movement for More Children, argued that the culture of wearing Hanbok should become established for special occasions throughout the life cycle, such as a child's first birthday, coming-of-age ceremonies, weddings, and 60th birthday celebrations.
Oh Nogyun, President of the Citizens' Human Rights Alliance, stressed the need to establish a cultural city brand where science and tradition coexist. Lee Heenae, Director of the Thursday Journalists' Club, suggested that Hanbok should be developed to be practical in terms of material and design, and proposed making Hanbok a fashion icon within K-Pop content.
In his closing remarks, Councilman Park Jongsun stated, "It is regrettable that Hanbok, despite being our traditional attire, is being forgotten due to indifference. In the next temporary session, I will establish the grounds for designating Daejeon Hanbok Day and prepare concrete preferential policies for Hanbok wearers," expressing his commitment.
