Dong-A University (President Lee Haewoo) awarded an honorary Doctorate in Tourism Management to Ngo Thi Phuong Lan, President of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, at the Leein Hall of the Seunghak Campus on August 27.
The honorary doctorate conferment ceremony was attended by President Lee Haewoo, President Ngo Thi Phuong Lan, officials from both universities, officials from Dong-A Hakshuk, Shin Jungtaek, President of the Alumni Association, Jeon Jaeho, Chairman of Financial News, other distinguished guests, Doan Phuong Lan, Consul General of Vietnam in Busan, Shin Choongil, former Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, and Vietnamese students currently enrolled at Dong-A University.
President Ngo Thi Phuong Lan earned her bachelor's degree in Oriental Studies from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City in 1997, her master's degree in Anthropology from the University of Toronto in 2002, and her doctorate in Folklore from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City in 2012. Since 2002, she has served as a professor, vice president, and currently as president of the university.
She has received numerous awards in recognition of her contributions to the advancement of Vietnamese women, nurturing future generations, and the development of society and the nation. In particular, she was awarded a citation from the Governor of Gyeongbuk Province for her contributions to the development of Vietnamese agriculture and rural communities based on the spirit of the Saemaul Undong, through an agricultural village project that was carried out over three years.
At the conferment ceremony, President Ngo Thi Phuong Lan stated, "The honorary doctorate from Dong-A University marks a new relationship between myself and Korea, and serves as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between the two countries. I will strive for the development of tourism and the dissemination of cultural and community values."
Lee Haewoo, President of Dong-A University, remarked, "President Ngo Thi Phuong Lan's achievements have had a significant impact on enhancing friendship between the two countries. I hope that this conferment will serve as a starting point for a new chapter in academic exchange and Korea-Vietnam cooperation."
Doan Phuong Lan, Consul General of Vietnam in Busan, also commented, "This event is not merely a recognition of a scholar, but also holds significance in promoting educational cooperation between the two countries."
