Traditional Craft Experience and Madanggeuk Performance in Myeongho-myeon
Expanding Cultural Opportunities for County Residents
Bonghwa County in North Gyeongsang Province will host the 'Bonghwa-ro Cultural Theater' on August 30 at 1:00 p.m. in the auditorium on the second floor of the Myeongho-myeon Administrative Welfare Center. This event is a resident-tailored cultural festival that combines hands-on activities and performances, and is open to all county residents free of charge.
The program, which blends tradition and modernity, will begin with a traditional craft experience, 'Making a Scented Sachet'. This will be followed by a madanggeuk (traditional Korean outdoor play) titled "Why Ado Came to the South" at 2:00 p.m.
This production has been recognized for its artistic merit, having won the Silver Prize at the Gomanaru Theater Festival and the Best Production Award from the Korea Theater Association. Since 2019, it has been performed more than 20 times across the country, consistently receiving positive reviews.
Delivering performances to culturally underserved areas, this initiative is part of the '2025 Culture Day - Bonghwa-ro Cultural Theater' program, hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and North Gyeongsang Province, and organized by the Gyeongbuk Cultural Foundation, the Regional Culture Promotion Agency, and the cultural creative group Gongteoda.
'Culture Day' is a system that allows people to easily enjoy culture in their daily lives, centered around the last Wednesday of every month. It is operated based on Article 12, Paragraph 2 of the Framework Act on Culture.
In particular, from June to November, the cultural creative group Gongteoda is conducting a 'performance delivery service' throughout the county. They are working to bridge the cultural gap and promote the social value of the arts by holding performances in areas experiencing severe population decline and aging.
A member of the audience who attended the performance in Socheon-myeon in July shared, "I lost track of time while clapping and enjoying the show together. The scented sachet-making experience was also impressive."
Culture permeating the lives of residents, a Bonghwa County official said, "This performance is more than just a spectacle; it is a place where local residents can come together and enjoy culture. We will continue to expand support so that all county residents can access culture and the arts in their daily lives."
The next performance is scheduled for September 26 at 2:00 p.m. at the indoor gateball stadium in Mulya-myeon, under the theme "Tiger Story". For inquiries regarding the performance, please contact the cultural creative group Gongteoda.
