The police investigating Assemblyman Lee Choonseok’s alleged stock trading under borrowed names have launched a compulsory investigation targeting the National Assembly Secretariat.
The Financial Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced on August 27 that it is conducting a search and seizure at the National Assembly Secretariat to secure internal documents.
On August 4, Assemblyman Lee became embroiled in controversy after a photo was taken in the main chamber of the National Assembly showing him trading stocks under the name of his aide, Mr. Cha.
Subsequently, the police booked Assemblyman Lee and Mr. Cha on charges including violations of the Real Name Financial Transactions Act and the Conflict of Interest Prevention Act, and are currently investigating the case.
On August 11, the police conducted a search and seizure at Assemblyman Lee’s office. It has been determined that during the police investigation on August 14, where he appeared as a suspect, Assemblyman Lee partially admitted to the charges.
