Gwangju Office of Education Considers Introducing 'Important Duty-Based Allowance' for Local Government Officials

On August 26, the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education announced that it is considering introducing an important duty-based allowance for local government officials.

The important duty-based allowance is a system that provides an additional monthly payment of 100,000 to 150,000 won to those responsible for duties deemed important, taking into account the significance and difficulty of the work, as well as the degree of collaboration required. According to the regulations on allowances for local government officials, this allowance can be provided to up to 24% of the total workforce.

In order to establish a fair and reasonable operational plan, the city office of education plans to launch a consultative body starting in September, which will include labor unions and school staff. The consultative body will focus on discussing the recipients, scope, and criteria for the allowance, as well as concerns about fairness that may arise if the allowance is uniformly granted to certain positions over others. To this end, the office sent an official notice about the consultative body to its affiliated institutions and schools on August 22 and is accepting applications for participation until August 29.

An official from the office stated, "We are well aware that school administrative directors bear significant responsibilities in areas such as finance, facilities, and safety," adding, "We will take the voices from the field seriously and gather sufficient input from labor unions and schools to develop a fair and sustainable system through reasonable measures."
