Mayor Lee Gangdeok Highlights Pohang's Transformation
from Steel City to Eco-friendly and AI-driven New Industries
...Paving the Way for a Low-carbon Green City
On August 26, Pohang City participated in the 16th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM16) and the 10th Mission Innovation Ministerial (MI-10) held at BEXCO in Busan, where representatives discussed clean energy transition agendas with countries from around the world and introduced Pohang City's carbon neutrality policies and key achievements.
'CEM16/MI-10' is a large-scale international conference co-chaired by the U.S. Department of Energy.
This annual event serves as a global platform, bringing together key figures such as ministers from over 40 countries and representatives of international organizations to focus on policy consultations and technological innovation for clean energy transition.
The Clean Energy Ministerial was launched in 2010 with 29 countries to discuss strategies for expanding clean energy, while Mission Innovation was established in 2015 with 24 countries to promote R&D in clean energy.
Lee Gangdeok, Mayor of Pohang, participated in the high-level dialogue session of this event, sharing Pohang City's strategies for advancing the steel industry and efforts to reduce carbon emissions, the creation of a hydrogen economy ecosystem, and examples of expanding eco-friendly infrastructure, highlighting Pohang City as a leading global city in the green transition.
In his keynote speech at the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) session, Mayor Lee emphasized that Pohang, traditionally based on the steel industry, is now transitioning to a low-carbon and eco-friendly steel sector, accelerating the development of future growth industries such as hydrogen and AI, and driving the transformation into an environmentally friendly city.
He also expressed his commitment to realizing "Pohang, a leading carbon-neutral city" as a development model where existing and future industries coexist, and to making Pohang a representative city of sustainable growth that contributes to the global response to the climate crisis through international cooperation.
This conference runs for three days from August 25 to August 27, with participants discussing key agendas for clean energy transition, including the expansion of renewable energy deployment, improvement of energy efficiency, and strengthening of international cooperation.
Mayor Lee stated, "By participating in this event, Pohang City will widely promote its future growth strategies and vision on the international stage and further strengthen its status as a sustainable innovation city centered on new industries such as eco-friendly hydrogen and AI."
In connection with this event, the "Global Knowledge Exchange on Low-carbon Steel" will be held at the Pohang POSCO International Center from August 27 to August 29, co-hosted by Pohang City, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the Pohang International Exhibition & Convention Center (POEX).
This event is expected to serve as an important opportunity to strengthen international cooperation, with over 100 government, business, and expert participants from 35 countries discussing low-carbon steel strategies, innovative technologies, and policy directions.
