Yangsan City in South Gyeongsang Province recently completed a special inspection of a total of 88 sites, including reinforced earth retaining walls, as a proactive measure to prevent similar accidents following the recent retaining wall collapse in Osan, Gyeonggi Province.
The facilities inspected included retaining walls located in roads, industrial complexes, factories, sports facilities, and apartment complexes. Specifically, 68 were reinforced earth retaining walls and 20 were general retaining walls. The inspections were conducted intensively over a short period from August 7 to August 14.
The inspection team was led by the head of the Citizen Safety Division, and included the departments responsible for the facilities, external experts, and private management entities, forming a joint inspection team. In accordance with guidelines from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the team focused on checking the overall safety of the facilities, including the presence of any major defects, as well as the condition of drainage systems, tilting, bulging, and other signs of external damage.
As a result of the inspection, one facility out of the total 88 was found to be in poor condition. Preparations are currently underway to repair and reinforce this facility. In addition, minor issues identified at some sites were addressed immediately with emergency measures on site, and further repair or reinforcement work will be carried out as needed.
An official from Yangsan City stated, "Although we conduct regular inspections, we prioritized citizen safety through proactive special inspections to prepare for extreme weather events such as recent heavy rains," adding, "We will continue to do our utmost to inspect and manage hazardous facilities at all times."
