Service Begins with the Naver Webtoon App Today
On August 25, Naver Webtoon announced that it will officially launch its short-form animation service 'Cuts' on September 1.
Cuts is a user-generated content (UGC) service where anyone can upload and watch animations of up to two minutes. Reflecting the trend toward enjoying short video content, the service has adopted a short-form format that is easier to produce than live-action or long-form animation, thereby increasing creative freedom.
To ensure stable service, Naver Webtoon began distributing the application on this day. Availability may vary depending on Android and iOS device environments. Starting next month, anyone will be able to enjoy the service on both the app and PC/mobile web.
On Cuts, users can watch animations ranging from highlights of original Naver Webtoon works to new stories from popular creators such as Lee Yoonchang (Zombie Daughter), Gaspard (Innate Idiots), and Langtto (Gadamhangseol). The service also enhances content diversity by featuring new series from well-known short-form creators like Isamsip, Ssokdoksaennim, and Ketchupmawang, as well as award-winning works from major domestic webtoon and animation department contests.
Kim Hyojeong, Head of Cuts Business at Naver Webtoon, said, "We expect that the strengths of short-form animation, which allow for various experimental attempts, will lead to a continuous stream of new storytelling content on Cuts. By adding sound and movement to the unique competitiveness of existing webtoons, Cuts will connect more readers and creators, creating synergy for the joint growth of webtoons and animation."
Naver Webtoon plans to expand the UGC creative ecosystem into the animation sector through Cuts, building on its experience establishing the domestic webtoon ecosystem with the 'Challenge Comics' UGC service launched in 2006. Several creator support programs designed to grow alongside Cuts will also be introduced within this year.
