Participation in the 2025 Climate Industry International Expo
Showcasing Next-Generation Electric Energy Technologies
Highlighting the Potential of the West Coast Energy Highway
LS Electric and LS Cable are presenting next-generation integrated solutions for power transmission, transformation, and distribution that can efficiently manage the rapidly increasing demand for electric energy in the age of artificial intelligence (AI).
On August 25, LS Electric announced that it will participate in the '2025 Climate Industry International Expo' together with LS Cable, which will be held at BEXCO in Busan from August 27 to 29 for three days.
This expo, co-hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the International Energy Agency (IEA), and the World Bank (WB), is the largest climate-related exhibition in Korea. This year, under the theme 'Energy for AI & AI for Energy,' it will explore energy technologies in the era of artificial intelligence.
In a 270㎡ (30-booth) exhibition space, the companies plan to unveil their HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) turnkey solution, HVDC conversion solution, and AI data center superconducting solution.
The two companies will highlight their core HVDC solutions and turnkey business capabilities, while emphasizing that they are the optimal partner for building the West Coast HVDC Energy Highway Project.
LS Electric will showcase its unique domestic HVDC conversion solution technology and business execution capabilities. LS Electric was the first Korean company to complete the development of a 500MW-class voltage-source HVDC transformer. The company has recently completed not only development tests but also customer acceptance tests, and is preparing for commercialization. This transformer, the largest voltage-source HVDC transformer developed in Korea, is scheduled to be applied to the Incheon HVDC converter station.
LS Electric has accumulated HVDC project orders worth over KRW 1 trillion, including the Bukdangjin-Godeok HVDC converter facility construction project (2014-2024) and the East Coast-Metropolitan Area HVDC converter facility construction project (2012-2026). In particular, after completing the development of both current-source and voltage-source HVDC transformers, LS Electric plans to finalize the localization and commercialization of voltage-source converter facilities by internalizing advanced conversion valve technology from GE Vernova.
LS Cable recently succeeded in commercializing a 525kV-class high-temperature HVDC cable with the world's largest transmission capacity. This product increases the permissible conductor temperature from the previous 70°C to 90°C, boosting transmission capacity by up to 50%. It is scheduled to be deployed in September for the first phase underground section of the 'East Coast-Metropolitan Area' HVDC project.
HVDC is considered a core technology for the carbon-neutral era, as it has lower transmission losses than conventional HVAC and can deliver up to three times more power over long distances.
LS Cable began developing HVDC cables in 2008, later than Europe (1950s) and Japan (1990s), but has become a leading company in just over a decade. Currently, only six companies worldwide have commercialized this technology, and LS Cable is the only one in Korea.
LS Cable's Vietnamese subsidiary, LS Eco Energy, is considering building a submarine cable plant in Vietnam and is actively promoting the overseas export of the government-led 'HVDC Energy Highway' model. In particular, the project has gained momentum since May, when the governments of Vietnam and Singapore agreed to build the 'ASEAN Submarine HVDC Transmission Network' connecting the two countries.
In addition, the two companies will introduce 'HyperGrid NX,' a superconducting power system for AI data centers. HyperGrid NX is an IDC (data center) power supply system that combines LS Electric's superconducting current limiter and LS Cable's superconducting cable. Previously, in July, LS Cable and LS Electric signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korea Electric Power Corporation for technological cooperation to build a superconducting power grid for data centers.
An LS Electric official stated, "Through proactive and intensive investment in next-generation power solutions such as HVDC and superconductivity, which will be key to success in the AI era, we have already secured world-class technological capabilities. With our overwhelming production, technology, and business capabilities, we will fundamentally transform the global power market, which has so far been dominated by a few major companies."
