Gil General Architects & Engineers Selected Through Public Procurement Service Review
The final winning entry for the architectural design competition for the 'Busan Children's Hospital Construction' project, which is being promoted by Busan Metropolitan City and Busan Medical Center, has been selected.
This competition was held for the plan to build a children's hospital affiliated with Busan Medical Center on a 1,600-square-meter site in Geoje-dong, Yeonje-gu, within the grounds of Busan Medical Center. Through the review by the Public Procurement Service, the design submitted by Gil General Architects & Engineers Co., Ltd. was selected as the final winner. Submissions were accepted from August 5 to 6, and the review was completed on August 20. The winning company will be responsible for architectural design for 10 months after signing the contract.
The selected design was highly evaluated for its layout plan that takes into account the medical flow between the children's hospital and the existing building, as well as for its efficient use of space.
The city aims to begin construction in the second half of next year, with completion scheduled for December 2027 and opening in 2028. Last October, the city secured 22.5 billion KRW in national funding and, in November of the same year, conditionally passed the central investment review by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, completing the administrative procedures.
The total project cost is 48.6 billion KRW. The hospital will have a building area of 1,600.55 square meters and a total floor area of 8,340 square meters, spanning three basement levels and three above-ground floors. It will be equipped with 50 beds and five departments: Pediatrics, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine, Pediatric Orthopedics, and Pediatric Dentistry. A 24-hour emergency response system will be established, and a specialized care center for children with severe disabilities will also be operated.
The city is also conducting research on the 'Children's Hospital Medical and Operational Plan' in collaboration with the Public Health and Medical Support Group. To secure specialized medical staff, the city plans to establish cooperative systems with university hospitals to address staffing needs. Busan Children's Hospital is expected to provide essential medical services 24/7, 365 days a year for children with chronic illnesses and those requiring inpatient treatment, services that are difficult to offer at private medical institutions. It is also expected to contribute to strengthening the functions of Busan Medical Center.
Cho Gyuyul, Director of the Busan City Citizens' Health Bureau, said, "Based on the winning proposal, we will work with Busan Medical Center to prepare the optimal implementation plan and create a patient-centered healing environment. Together with Busan Medical Center, we will focus on medical and operational preparations to provide reliable public healthcare services so that children can grow up healthy."
